Spending time 4-H summer camp was one of my fondest memories. I loved it so much that I became a counselor. Then when my kids were young, and I was their den leader, I found myself spending time leading kids at Boy Scout camps. Whether it is learning how to make your own food and sleeping under the stars or learning other real-life skills it was always a fun and engaging way to learn new things. Fast forward to my current role of directing the Youth Entrepreneur Camp at the UW-Madison Small Business Development Center and to running More Than a Lemonade Stand Youth Entrepreneur Camps for E-seedling, LLC, my own small business, I am still loving the camp environment and find that the experiential learning that a camp provides works great for teaching entrepreneurship.
Problem-solving, leadership skills, creativity, team work, communication and collaboration are all characteristics of an entrepreneur, not to mention 21st century skills, and can be integrated as a camp track in a fun and engaging way. While not all of your students may want to become young entrepreneurs; learning these 21st century skills will help them as an innovative employee and in other areas of their lives.

One simple way of doing this is by running an “Apprentice Style” Lemonade Stand Competition. This fun activity not only teaches the basics of entrepreneurship but can also be set up to raise funds for a camp need or scholarships for the camp (that is what the camps I run do).
Here are some FAQ’s to answer your questions about how the Biz Ops Game™ works and what it teaches.
- What is the Lemonade Stand “Apprentice Style” Competition and how long does it take?
It is a Lemonade Stand competition between 2 or more teams of 10-12 kids. They compete for raising the most funds (usually for a cause determined by them or the camp), best tasting, best display and best teamwork. - What ages is the lemonade stand activity for?
- It was originally designed for grades 6-8 but also works well for grades 4 & 5. I would guess it would also work well for high school aged kids.
- How does it teach business operations?
- Teams are creating and running an actual business. They have to come up with their own name and identity, the products they sell, their pricing and how they are going to run their business.
- Teams start out with a budget that must be paid back after the sale.
- Teams assign business roles such as accountant, sales person, purchaser, designer based on each team members’ strengths.
- Teams plan their expenses and test their product.
- The salespersons sell their product to the customer.
- Teams track sales (quantity & dollars) and expenses and create a profit and loss statement to see which team wins.
- How does the lemonade stand activity teach budgeting and financial record keeping?
- Teams start with a budgeted amount and choose what they are going to spend their money on.
- They must pay back the budgeted amount with their sales proceeds.
- There are several factors to take into consideration when budgeting their money including the size and number of cups, decorations they need to purchase, and the lemonade and other products they are selling.
- They track their actual expenses and sales and finish up with a profit and loss statement.
- How does the lemonade stand activity teach teamwork and collaboration?
- The kids are divided into teams of 10-12; each team comes up with a business name, a theme and what products they want to sell.
- They have to agree upon what to spend their money on.
- They work together to achieve a common goal of making the most net profit by listening to the customer, communicating to the team and creating a quality product.
- How does the lemonade stand activity teach customer service and communication?
- Since customers will usually leave a tip or donation if they receive good service it is important for everyone on the team provides excellent communication and customer service.
- The sales person should be coached by their leader – to introduce their self with their name, title, a firm handshake and name of company.
- How does the lemonade stand competition teach creativity and problem-solving?
- Each team starts out by coming up with creating their own company name, branding and charity they want to contribute to (unless the camp determines this).
- Teams need to be creative to solve the problem of how are they going to sell the most lemonade so that they can maximize donations to their charity and ultimately win the competition.
- Each team has to be creative in how they spend their money so they aren’t spending too much on materials and in how they spend their time so they can be prepared for the sale.
- How can you reinforce their learning?
- The nature of the activity is experiential so there will be lot of learning from the actual preparation and activity.
- The competitive nature of the activity brings in a fun factor that allows the teams to learn through play and experience without the penalty of failure of a real business.
- Debriefing the activity is very important to review what each team learned – it gives the kids a chance to learn from each other.
- Have the kids create another fund raiser for a camp need where they make and sell a product that other kids will buy.
